mftp 1.0 (02.01.1995) : MUI - ftp by Michael Neuweiler
Introdution:
============
Well, it's quite obvious what this thing does. It's for all those AmiTCP
users who are sick of typing 'get thisfilewiththatverylongname' and
'get thisdamnfiletoo_v1.1837.lha.Z' in the ordinary ftp or ncftp.
I always was envious of those MS-Windows ftp programs which were so
comfortable to handle ;-) .
Installation:
=============
Nothing easier than that. Copy the file 'mftp' to somewhere in your path
(e.g. amitcp:bin/) and have a close look at the section 'Gifts' in this
documentation :-) - that's it !
Of course you need to install AmiTCP and MUI first but that's not my job to
explain.
How to start this masterpiece:
==============================
Just start AmiTCP and click on the icon or type 'mftp' in your shell.
The flags and commands described in ftp.man should still work if you
want to add something to your commandline (but it's really not
necessary).
Operating:
==========
The handling is very easy. The left side of the window reflects your system
and the right side shows the files and drawers of the remote system.
In the middle row you have some standard file-handling buttons as in any
disk-tool:
binary/ascii: Transfer the files in binary or ascii mode (check ftp.man)
Arrow : Shows the direction when copying files. It points _away_ from
the active field. You can toggle the active field by pressing
this button (it toggles automatically if you select a file).
parent : Get the parent directory of the active field.
refresh : Refresh the contents of the active field.
mkdir : Create a directory in the active field.
rmdir : Remove a directory in the active field.
filter : Set the file-filter for the active field (not implemented yet).
copy, rename, delete and view:
Should be self explaining. You can select multiple files.
dirinfo : Show the directory as sent by server (not implemented yet).
ftp * : Lets you enter ftp-commands manually (see ftp.man).
listview * : Shows the output of all ftp-commands.
(* only available when selected in setup, see below.)
connect : Get a connection to a host. More on that later.
close : Close an active connection.
setup : Adjust your settings (see below).
about : Show program information.
exit : End program.
The setup-requester:
email address:
Enter your email address here (used for anonymous login).
default transfer type:
Set the transfer type you want to use by default.
show command in-/output:
Display the gadgets marked with * (see above). If it is selected you can
enter ftp-commands manually.
log ftp messages to file:
Store the ftp-messages into a file (not implemented).
auto update remote dir:
If selected the remote directory- and file-list gets updated
automatically if you change the directory (as if you press 'refresh').
confirm delete:
If selected you must confirm every deletion you want to perform.
sound when transfer done:
Flashes the screen if a file has been received completely.
binary/ascii patterns:
Here you can enter file-patterns (standard AmigaDOS, e.g. *.lha) to
predefine files which will be sent/received in binary or ascii mode.
This overrides the currently set mode in the main window.
(not implemented yet)
predefined hosts:
Lets you predefine some hosts you visit often.
The connect-requester:
name : You can give every host a name (only useful in connection with
predefined hosts, see setup).
address : Enter the name of the host you want to connect or its IP-address
(eg. nic.switch.ch or 130.60.135.66)
username : Your username. If you want to login anonymously don't enter
anything, just make shure that 'anonymous' is selected.
password : Your password (not displayed).
account : Your account (mostly unused).
directory: The directory of the remote system you want to be after login.
anonymous: Lets you decide whether you want to login with a username or
as an anonymous guest.
Errors:
=======
- I can't get a connection to the remote host:
Sometimes this happens. I don't know why, sorry. Just try several times.
- I'm connected to a host which sends the directory not in amiga (amitcp's ls)
or unix format and mftp can't handle it:
Jep, I know. Until now mftp supports only the formats provided by unix
or the 'ls' command of amitcp. I just was to lazy to check out other
formats. If you need the support of another hosttype just send me a
copy of a directory-listing (maybe use a commandline ftp).
Thanks to:
==========
Mark Tomlinson <mark@garden.equinox.gen.nz> and
Geoff McCaughan <geoff@equinox.gen.nz> for porting the original Berkeley
ftp to amiga code.

- The MUI-stuff (even more boring !):
This application uses MUI - MagicUserInterface (c) by Stefan Stuntz
Stefan Stuntz, Eduard-Spranger-Straße 7, 80935 München, GERMANY
MUI is a system to generate and maintain graphical user interfaces. With
the aid of a preferences program, the user of an application has the
ability to customize the outfit according to his personal taste.
MUI is distributed as shareware. To obtain a complete package containing
lots of examples and more information about registration please look for
a file called "muiXXusr.lha" (XX means the latest version number) on
your local bulletin boards or on public domain disks.
- And last but not least my own (most boring):
mftp (based on the above) by Michael Neuweiler <dolphin@zool.unizh.ch> is
released as shareware, giftware or whatsoeverware. This means that you
may copy this program _only_ for free (no money to be taken) and you
may use it for free. BUT...
Gifts (VERY VERY VERY VERY INTERESTING !!):
============================================
* ...you are implicitly asked to do something good for your conscience and
* for a poor student (meeee !!) who is still programming on a A500 (can you
* imagine ?!?) by sending some money, e.g. $100.- (ok, $10.- are fine too)
* or at least a nice postcard (hmpf) to the address below. I spent many
* nights in front of my Amiga until this program did finally run (more or
* less :-).
This program is provided "as is". I can't and I will not take any
responsability for any damage caused by this program (neither on your
computer nor on the remote system). It has been tested with AmiTCP 4.0 (slip
connection) on a Amiga 500 with OS3.0, 5MB Ram and 42MB HD (GVP) and no
serious errors occured during operation but anyway.. nobody's save of
murphy's laws.
Have fun,
Michael Neuweiler
